Jeans aderenti, lacca per capelli, un carico di rock and roll e tanta voglia di divertirsi: ecco un mix esplosivo che risponde al nome Black Diamonds, giovane rock band svizzera.
Il nome tradotto vuol dire “diamanti neri”, già questa la dice lunga su quanto sia preziosa una gemma grezza. All’inizio del 2017 esce il loro nuovo lavoro, “Once upon a time”, e nell’autunno dello stesso anno i Black Diamonds partono per un tour europeo, come gruppo di apertura della rock band svedese H.E.A.T. In tre settimane e mezzo fanno 18 concerti in 10 paesi diversi. Forti di quell’esperienza, nel giugno 2018 decidono di realizzare l’album dal vivo “Once upon a time – live in Nottingham”. Rientrati dal loro ultimo tour, i quattro musicisti si concedono alle pagine di Musica Intorno.
Abbiamo conosciuto i Black Diamonds nel tour con gli svedesi H.E.A.T nel novembre 2017 a Milano, con riscontri più che positivi tra i fans italiani. Quanta importanza ha rivestito per voi quell’esperienza?
Manu: «Innanzitutto, felice di sapere che il nostro show sia piaciuto! In effetti, andare in tour con gli H.E.A.T è stata la decisione migliore che avremmo potuto prendere: ci ha aperto tante porte, come la possibilità di suonare sui grandi palchi dei festival, andare in tour anche con Crystal Ball e soprattutto ha contribuito a diffondere la nostra musica in tutta Europa. Inoltre abbiamo stretto amicizia con gli H.E.A.T e i Degreed… cosa si può desiderare di più?!»
Dee: «Sì, è stata una decisione davvero importante che ci ha portato in Italia per la prima volta! Senza un tour, non avremmo potuto suonare nel vostro Paese. Speriamo di tornarci presto.»
Il vostro primo album, “Perfect sin” aveva riscosso molto successo, portandovi in tour ovunque. Canzoni come I’ll be ok, Hands of destiny, Judgment day e soprattutto We want to party sono particolarmente apprezzate in scaletta. Ci raccontereste com’è nata quest’ultima, divenuta ormai lo slogan preferito dei vostri fans?
Andi: «Hai ragione, “We want to party” è diventato davvero uno slogan! Doveva essere una canzone divertente, non molto accademica. È un brano piuttosto semplice ma, quando entra in testa, non esce più! Durante il tour con gli H.E.A.T abbiamo deciso di suonarla come primo pezzo, in modo tale che risultasse subito una specie di promessa.»
Manu: «E, quando inizi il tuo show, con le parole “Siamo qui, vogliamo festeggiare!”, non ci sono più domande. Salta sul treno o lo perdi! Fortunatamente la maggior parte delle persone l’ha preso… Sarei curioso di sapere come sarebbe suonare quella canzone alla mensa della nostra casa di riposo, fra 60 anni… solo per vedere l’effetto che fa!»
Ragazzi, quali sono le vostre influenze musicali? A chi vi ispirate?
Manu: «Ogni membro della band ascolta uno stile diverso di musica rock: Dee ama il blues rock dal sapore texano; Andi e Mich, con le loro radici negli anni ‘80, il rock classico e glam, così come le mie influenze dal power metal al rock melodico. È tutto basato su questo mix esplosivo e – a mio modesto parere – è ciò che rende il suono dei Black Diamonds unico nel suo genere!»
Mich: «Andi e io siamo cresciuti con gruppi come Guns N’Roses, Aerosmith, Kiss, Queen, AC/DC, Metallica… band ancora in tour per il mondo, è incredibile!»
Andi: «Ripensandoci, i miei gusti musicali non si sono molto evoluti da quando avevo dodici anni…»
“Once upon a time”, il vostro ultimo album dalla copertina così accattivante, è stato registrato in Svezia. Come ci si sente, sapendo che alla Bohus Sound Studio sono passate prima di voi parecchie band strafamose?
Dee: «Eravamo orgogliosi di lavorare nello stesso sound studio di altre grandi band. È stato come se si stesse avverando un sogno!»
Andi: «La verità è che l’album è stato registrato in Svizzera: Tobias Lindell ha lavorato sul mixed, mentre Dragan Tanaskovic ha fatto il mastering finale al Bohus. Non siamo volati lassù in Svezia questa volta, ma abbiamo visitato lo studio alcuni anni fa ed è un luogo davvero stimolante.»
A ben guardare, i vostri video risultano spesso più divertenti che seri. È una scelta studiata o del tutto casuale?
Mich: «Non è facile fare un buon video musicale. Il divertimento è la nostra motivazione e ci piace guardare noi stessi mentre facciamo cose stupide…»
Manu: «È successo per caso. Ad esempio, il video di “Thrillride” racconta proprio quello che può accadere se metti quattro ragazzi svizzeri in una fattoria senza niente, tranne una macchina fotografica e delle birre.»
Dee: «I video mostrano esattamente chi siamo. Non veniamo da Hollywood o da qualsiasi altro studio cinematografico. Si tratta semplicemente di divertirsi insieme davanti a una videocamera.»
Andi: «A dire la verità, già ci divertiamo un sacco quando scriviamo le canzoni, non sono solo nei video.»
Dopo l’uscita di “Not going home” abbiamo letto che state lavorando alla realizzazione del video sulla splendida ballata “Love, lies, loneliness”. Ci sussurrate qualche anticipazione?
Mich: «È stato Andi a proporre la realizzazione di un altro video. Ho amato l’idea della foresta e del lago fin dall’inizio.»
Andi: «Beh sì, non c’ho dormito la notte… La canzone parla di una relazione interrotta e quindi il video deve essere molto realistico.»
Dee: «Il video di “Love, lies, loneliness” mostrerà un nuovo lato dei Black Diamonds! Siamo ansiosi di pubblicarlo.»
Come avete già dato ampia prova, i Black Diamonds sono in grado di suonare, sia in ambienti piccoli e intimi, sia in grandi festival. È più difficile riuscire a coinvolgere un pubblico ristretto o una folla oceanica?
Manu: «Penso che non si tratti della quantità di pubblico, ma di “partecipazione”.»
Mich: «Credo che la cosa più importante sul palco, e allo stesso tempo la più difficile, sia stabilire un contatto visivo con tutto il tuo pubblico, anche con quello più distante.»
Andi: «Probabilmente la chiave non è tanto la dimensione del luogo, ma – ancora una volta – che ci stiamo divertendo. In qualche modo le persone sembrano riconoscere il nostro divertimento e aderiscono. È una pazza spirale verso l’alto e tutti sono felici di farne parte.»
We met Black Diamonds on the tour with the Swedes Band H.E.A.T in Milan, November 2017, finding positive opinions among Italian fans. How important was this experience for you?
Manu: «First of all, glad to hear that you liked our show! In fact, to go on Tour with H.E.A.T was the best decision we could have made. It opened so many doors, like playing on big festival stages this summer, go on another tour with Crystal Ball and last but no least helped to spread our songs all over Europe. Besides that, we made friends with both bands, H.E.A.T and Degreed… what more can you wish for?!»
Dee: «Yes, it was a really important decision and it brought us to Italy for the first time. Since most of the people never heard of Black Diamonds before, we could not have played Italy without a tour. Hopefully we will have a chance to come back soon.»
Your first album “Perfect sin”, was a great success, taking you on tour almost everywhere. Songs like “I’ll be ok”, “Hands of destiny”, “Judgment day” and the famous “We want to party” are particularly appreciated in the lineup. Can you tell us how the latter came about because it seems to be the favorite slogan of the fans still today?
Andi: «You are right, “We want to party” really became somewhat of a slogan in a very positive way. It was supposed to be a fun song, not very academic. It’s a pretty simple song, but obviously you don’t get it out of your head easily. With the H.E.A.T tour we decided to play it as the first song to make a statement right away.»
Manu: «… And when you start your show with the lyrics “we are here, we want to party” there are no questions left. Jump on the train or get lost. Luckily most people hopped on… The chorus is catchy and you immediately can sing along. I’m really looking forward to play it in the canteen of our retirement home in about 60 years just to look who remember the song.»
What are your musical influences past and present?
Manu: «Every band member is listening to a different style of rock music: we got Dee who loves texas-flavoured blues rock; Andi and Mich with their roots deep down in 80s, classic and glam rock as well as my influences from power metal and melodic rock. It’s all about the mix and – in my humble opinion – it’s what makes Black Diamonds sounds unique.»
Mich: «I would say Andi and I were listening to the same good old stuff and we grew up with bands like Guns N’Roses, Aerosmith, Kiss, Queen, AC/DC, Metallica… and they‘re still around and still rocking the world stages, that‘s incredible!»
Andi: «Thinking about it, my music taste has not really evolved a lot since I was twelve…»
“Once upon a time”, your latest album with so captivating cover, was recorded in Sweden. How did you feel knowing that many famous bands have passed at Bohus Sound Studio?
Dee: «We are proud to work with the same sound studio as other big named bands. It’s like a dream was coming true finally!»
Andi: «That’s right, but truth to be told the album was recorded in Switzerland. Tobias Lindell worked his magic and mixed everything, while Dragan Tanaskovic made the final mastering at Bohus. We did not fly up there this time, but we visited the studio a few years ago and it truly is an inspiring place.»
Your videos are often more fun than serious. Why this choice?
Mich: «To tell the truth… it‘s not easy to make a good music video. Fun is our motivation and we like to watch ourselves doing stupid things…»
Manu: «It happened by accident! For example the “Thrillride” video: it’s just what happens if you put 4 swiss boys on a farm with nothing left but a camera and some beers.»
Dee: «The videos show exactly who we are. We’re not from Hollywood or any other film studio. It’s all about having fun together and a camera captures all of that.»
Andi: «It’s not only the videos, there is a lot of laughter already when we write songs.»
After the release “Not going home” we read that you are working on the realization of the new video on the wonderful ballad “Love, lies, loneliness”. Do you give us some anticipation?
Mich: «I think it was Andi who came up with the idea to make another video. I loved his vision with a forest and lake from the start.»
Andi: «Well yes, I couldn’t sleep one night because my mind was working on this idea for the next video. The song is about a broken relationship and therefore the video has to be much more sincere.»
Dee: «This video will show a new side of the Black Diamonds. I’m looking so forward to release the video “Love, lies, loneliness”.»
We have found that the Black Diamonds are able to play both in small and intimate locations, both in big festivals (Bang Your Head Festival is an example). In both cases you give yourself satisfying every type of audience, but it is more difficult to involve a small audience or a large audience?
Manu: «I think it’s not about the size of the audience, it’s more about their “partybility”.»
Mich: «In my case it‘s harder with the large audience, people are further away from you and it is harder to make eye contact, which I think is most important thing on stage.»
Andi: «Probably the key is not the size of the location but again that we are enjoying ourselves. We love to play concerts and we have a lot of fun onstage. Somehow people seem to recognize that and join in. That’s a crazy upwards spiral and everybody is just happy to be part of that.»
